Qatar announced on Tuesday that one member of its security forces was killed when Israel carried out an unprovoked strike on Hamas officials in the capital, Doha.

The country's interior ministry said Saad Mohammed al-Humaidi al-Dosari of the Internal Security Force, known as Lekhwiya, died during the Israeli attack while “performing his duties at the targeted site”.

“[Security forces are] intensively monitoring developments and taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of citizens and residents, which remains a top priority,” the statement added.

The strike has triggered global condemnation of Israel for violating Qatar’s sovereignty and breaching international law.

Doha has been a pivotal mediator in ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas. Details on other casualties have not been made public yet.

Hamas issued its first statement on Tuesday evening, slamming Israel for trying to sabotage the ceasefire and prisoner exchange negotiations.

The group said its senior leadership survived the assassination attempt but confirmed five deaths.

“This once again reveals the criminal nature of the occupation and its desire to undermine any chances of reaching an agreement,” Hamas said.

The movement also released the names of five members killed: Jihad Labad, director of Khalil al-Hayya’s office; Humam al-Hayya, son of Khalil al-Hayya; Abdullah Abdul Wahid; Moamen Hassouna; and Ahmed al-Mamluk.

Doha rejects US claim that it was informed

In Washington, the White House said President Donald Trump “feels very badly” about the attack and had instructed his envoy, Steve Witkoff, to warn Qatar before the strike.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed the US military informed the administration on Tuesday morning. When asked who provided that intelligence, she declined to answer.

Leavitt said Trump later phoned both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, to express regret.

She described the assault as an “unfortunate incident” and quoted Trump as assuring Qatar that “such a thing will not happen again on their soil”.

Doha flatly rejected Washington’s version of events. Foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said Qatar had received no advance warning.

“The statements being circulated that the State of Qatar was pre-informed of the attack are completely false,” Ansari said in a statement.

“The call that was received from an American official came during the sound of the explosions that resulted from the Israeli attack in Doha,” he added.
